Summer break is the perfect time for road trips, beach getaways, and family adventures. But if you or your child is in orthodontic treatment, it’s important to make sure your orthodontic care stays on track while you’re away. With a little preparation, your vacation doesn’t have to interrupt your smile journey!
Here are our top travel tips to keep your braces safe and your smile shining all summer long:
Pack a Braces Travel Kit
Don’t leave home without the essentials! Whether you’re traveling across the country or heading to a weekend camp, having the right supplies makes all the difference.
Your travel kit should include:
- Orthodontic wax
- Travel toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste
- Floss and floss threaders
- Interdental brushes
- Extra elastics (if instructed to wear)
- A small bottle of mouthwash (optional)
- Nail clippers or small wire cutter (in case of an emergency wire issue)
Invisalign/Confident wearers should also bring:
- Storage case for trays
- Backup aligners (if switching during your trip)
Stick to Your Routine
It’s easy to forget your oral hygiene routine when your days are filled with fun and sun– but skipping brushing or forgetting your elastics could slow down your progress.
Helpful reminders:
- Set alarms on your phone to stay on schedule for brushing, flossing, and elastic wear.
- Brush after every meal or rinse with water if brushing isn’t immediately possible.
Watch What You Eat (Even on Vacation!)
Summer treats like popcorn at the movies or sticky taffy on the boardwalk can be tempting– but they’re not worth damaging your braces.
Stick with braces-safe snacks, such as:
- Soft fruits like bananas or watermelon
- Smoothies and yogurt
- Ice cream (no nuts or hard mix-ins)
Know What to Do in an Emergency
Most orthodontic issues aren’t urgent, but it’s good to know what to do just in case.
- Loose bracket? Cover it with orthodontic wax if it’s irritating, and call us when you return.
- Poking wire? Try using a clean pencil eraser to gently push it down or clip it with sanitized nail clippers. Use wax if you’re unable to push or clip it.
- Lost aligner tray? Wear your previous set to maintain progress until you return.
If you’re unsure whether to seek help while away, just give our office a call– we can advise you over the phone or help find a nearby orthodontist if needed.
Schedule Your Appointments Around Your Trip
Let us know about your travel plans in advance so we can schedule your next visit at the right time. If you’re due for an appointment, it’s best to fit it in before your vacation.
